Reindeer hide shedding or smelling: causes and what to do

Does dried reindeer hide shed?

Not normally, as long as it is maintained and stored correctly. Reindeer hairs are hollow and can break, which can look like shedding.

Why is my reindeer hide shedding a lot?

Usually because of incorrect care or storage. If the hide stays damp, is packed tightly or is exposed to heat over time, it can turn sour. When that happens, the hairs loosen and the hide can shed heavily.

Does reindeer hide smell?

A dried hide should not normally smell bad. It may have a faint natural smell at first, and some people notice it more than others. The smell usually fades quickly when the hide is aired.

What should I do if my hide smells?

Start by airing it. Hang it somewhere dry and airy under a roof, for example in a shed. If the smell stays, spray mild soapy water on both the skin side and the hair side, then hang the hide to dry.

How do I prevent shedding and smell?

  • Dry the hide well after every trip by hanging it somewhere airy and dry.

  • Let it dry naturally if it gets damp.

  • Do not store it in plastic for long periods.

  • Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as ovens and underfloor heating.

  • Consider using an extra layer between the hide and the ground.

  • Store it in the rain cover for hides, but only once it is completely dry.
