Frequently Asked Questions
Here you’ll find answers to common questions about gift cards, delivery, and purchases.
A dried reindeer hide should normally not smell bad. It may have a slight, natural smell at first, and some people may perceive this as a bit stronger than others. The smell usually diminishes quickly with airing.Dried reindeer hides do not normally shed hair when properly maintained and stored. At the same time, many people experience that reindeer hides shed a lot—this is often due to improper maintenance or storage. If the hide is left damp, tightly packed, or exposed to heat over time, it can begin to sour. When this happens, the hairs loosen and the hide can shed significantly.Reindeer hair has hollow fibers that provide very good insulation, but also make the hairs more vulnerable if the hide is not treated correctly. For best durability, the hide should be stored dry, airy, and cool, and allowed to dry naturally if it becomes damp. Avoid plastic, direct heat, and prolonged moisture.
Dried reindeer hideA hide that has been taken from the animal and dried, often stretched on a frame or hung. This is the most basic treatment, where skin and fur are preserved in their natural form without the use of chemicals.Prepared reindeer hideA hide that has been processed and made ready for use through traditional methods. This may involve scraping, softening, fat treatment, and smoking. Preparation has been used for generations and results in a supple and functional hide, often used for clothing and equipment.Tanned reindeer hideHere the hide has gone through a tanning process that stabilizes the fibers. This can be done with vegetable agents such as bark, with minerals, or with synthetic tanning substances. The result is a hide that can be used either with or without hair, depending on the intended use.Impregnated reindeer hideA hide that has received an additional treatment with impregnation. This is applied after the hide has been dried, prepared, or tanned, and provides extra protection against moisture and dirt.
