How to wash and clean reindeer hide
Can I machine wash a reindeer hide?
No. Reindeer hide should not be machine washed.
How do I clean a tanned reindeer hide?
Shake it regularly and hang it up to air when needed. Small stains can be wiped off with a damp cloth. This applies to both the indoor hide and the dog-crate hide.
How do I keep a dried reindeer hide clean and fresh?
After use, hang it somewhere airy and dry, under a roof or in a shed. Once it is completely dry, you can store it in the rain cover for hides, which also keeps loose hairs off your other gear and out of the car. A dried hide can also be wiped with a damp cloth, brushed and washed in snow. Freezing it is another option.
Can I use soap or detergent?
Yes, you can use soap, but the hide must be dried well afterwards. To remove a smell, spray mild soapy water on both the skin side and the hair side, then hang the hide to dry.
What if the hide gets wet?
Let it dry naturally somewhere airy and cool. Keep it away from direct heat, such as ovens and underfloor heating, and away from plastic.
